So does the dentist get in trouble for having unregistered staff?

Yes it is up to the dentist to check that his staff are registered. That said as long as you have paid your registration fee, by whatever method, and have proof it has been paid (you are not one of the 4000 removed) then the fact that you do not have a registrration certificate, in itself, doesn't mean you are not on the register.
They are just being slow sending out the certificares. I really can't see what excuse they have.

I'm sorry to say but the whole thing has been a farce. The GDC (or its agents) have failed miserably here. I know of Dental Hygienists that have been working illegally (that is not on the register) believing that all was good.
On the 18th August (the date of the letter) the GDC (or its agents) sent out letters advising (previous!) Registrants that they had been removed from the register for non-payment of their ARF.
Immediate phone calls were made to "customer services" where they were told that they would be expected to pay the additional fee to be retsored to the register, despite the error being on the GDC (or its agents!).
The GDC did NOT prepare adequately for this. At the same time DCPs were told that we could post our CPD online, using the eGDC service, again, not true.
However, my real issue here is that the GDC serves to protect the public but it is apparent that 4000+DCPs may have been working without registration for approximately 20 days (when the letters arrived). This is 20 days where the GDC would (and indeed cannot) NOT have been able to take any action against any of these individuals for issues relating to dentistry or such actions that would normally affect their registration.
Whilst many may have left their chosen profession behind them (there were 3 at my own practice) I know of a Dental Hygienist colleague who was working perfectly happily in the belief that her registration had gone through as normal, only to receive the letter on the 20th advising this was not so.
If the GDC use the excuse that reminder letters were sent out, I would just like to point out that I re-registered in late JUne by card payment but still received the reminder letters. Anyone else would sleep sound believing that they would be ok.
The GDC has failed to protect the public and in turn, failed its registrants.

So....if it can be demonstrated that the registrants did everything that could be expected of them in a timely manner; who bears the responsibility and would there be the possibility of a class action for loss of earnings and/or would the GDC make a block exemption for these people to carry on working?

Jason,
This is similar to the debacle that happened a few years ago when 1000+ GDPs (et al) had theirs messed up. I doubt they'll take responsibility butif someone was brave enough I'm sure the courts would hear it!

Shaun (Who), you've got a plausable gob on you; have the news media been made aware of the number of dental practices being hobbled by the ineptitude and inflexible attitude of the GDC in these times of inadequate dental provision and high unemployment?

How about Watchdog
Their link for "Got a Story"

As its consumer affairs and dentistry, particularly access, is difficult for many, perhaps we should also say a bit about Direct Access ?
