It is with deep regret and sadness that I have to announce the sad loss of Bernie Kieser who died peacefully in his sleep on 7/9/09. Bernie had fought cancer over the last year and as usual had defied all predictions.

Posted - 07/09/2009 : 13:12:17What a bad year for perio. Bernie was great, questioning and challenging everyone and everything. He was a great mind and very humble. At the Cambridge meeting of the BSP 2 years ago Bernie said that when he told people that he was a Periodontist and they asked what that was, he would tell them that he was a Specialist in teaching people how to clean their teeth!
Posted - 07/09/2009 : 14:49:33Is he the same Dr Kieser who was in the perio dept. at the Eastman in the late 70s? (I think he was South African). If so, I am saddened to hear the news. I worked with him back then, when I was starting out as a Dental Nursing student, I was very green, and he was so nice to me! He was a very energetic and dynamic person.
Posted - 09/09/2009 : 11:28:20What a rubbish start to the year!! First Graham Smart, now Bernie Keiser of whom both Graham and his partner in crime Phil Ower were disciples.
I remember hearing Bernie speak at a BDA conference many years ago where he was stirring - suggesting that one could raise a flap, polish the calculus below and have a good result at a time when gingival surgery (gingivectomy) was almost a panacea for perio.
He was against surgery in those days - I don't know if that view was modified later - on the grounds that there was little point trying to reconstruct what had already failed. He was more of the school that cleaning was everything. Can't really argue with that myself 8-)
Cheers Bernie - a great periodontist and one of life's characters.
